After visiting Guatemala this week, I think that I can confidently say it is one of the most underrated vacation destinations and often overlooked as an option for a peaceful getaway. We often hear of people going to Guatemala for mission work or hiking expeditions, but there is so much more to the country than meets the eye.
My Top 3 Suggestions for Relaxation in Guatemala:
1. Lake Atitlan
This lake is serene, still, and breathtaking. It surrounds three inactive volcanoes that serve as a postcard background in all of your vacation pics. The shore can be used to take a quick dip or access the dock for a boat ride that overwhelms the senses. Atitlan is an absolute must when you visit Guatemala. Don't skip it!
2. Hotel Camino Real
Camino Real is in Antigua, Guatemala, only two blocks from the main square. If you walk too fast, you'll miss it! It's slightly elevated on a hill and feels totally detached from the city center. The Camino Real is 5-star luxury that, honestly, I did not expect to find in quaint Antigua. The accommodations are plush and impeccably clean. There's a spa, jacuzzi, concierge service, and everything else you need to feel pampered and rested. Did I mention it's gated and secured by key card access? Total peace and quiet, if you want it.
3. Porta Del Lago
Porta Del Lago is a perfect option for sleeping overnight at Lake Atitlan. You wake up in the morning to a sunrise over the volcanoes and a balcony view from your room that offers complete tranquility. The pool is right downstairs, and the staff is top-notch. For a reasonably priced lake retreat, Porta Del Lago does the trick.
